Ai :
Hello and welcome to Eng for Fun, the
show that teaches and improves your English skill in daily life. I'm Aiya. Nice
to see you again
Mel :
And of course, I'm Mel. Today we're
going to learn about the job interview. We'll discuss
and
learn how to make more opportunities to work in companies that use English for
communication
in the work-place.
Ai :
Well, as globalization continues,
students from around the world have more and more opportunities to
work in companies that use English as the means of communication in the
work-place. With the opening up of the ASEAN economies as the
AEC due in 2015, more foreign companies are entering into Thailand for
investment.
Mel :
As a result, Thai university students
are particularly interested in learning 'English for
employment' skills. This lesson will provide the
students an opportunity to practice job interviews in English using different
types of activities.
Ai :
So, English is very important, right?
Mel:
Yeah, it's very very important. And
today we have an example of interview conversation to help you to develop your
English skill. Ready?
Ai :
Yes. ready! Let's go!

Model dialogues during
job interview
Dialogue 1
Situation :
This applicant is applying for the
position of secretary in a large company.
Interviewer :
Good morning, Miss Demi. My name is
Catherine. I'm the Office Manager. How do you do?
Applicant : How do you do?
Interviewer :
Please sit down.
Applicant :
Thank you.
Interviewer :
Now, I have your application form here
in front of me and I'd like you to tell me more about your qualifications.
Applicant :
I can take shorthand at 120 words a
minute and type 90 words a minute. I can operate many computer programs for
office works. At my present job l organize the filing system, plan my boss's
travel itinerary, organize and plan the agenda for the board of director's
meetings, and take the minutes at the meetings.
Interviewer :
Besides those qualifications, have you
had any experience in answering routine correspondence and telephone enquiries?
Applicant : Right after I
graduated, I worked with M.B.S. Company as an appointments secretary . I had to
screen my boss's phone calls and mails, as well as attend to routine matters.
It was my responsibility to decide which matters were important and which were
less important.
Interviewer : What makes you want to
quit your present job and work with us?
Applicant :
Well, my workplace is very far from my
house and the traffic is very heavy in the morning. If I can get a job here, I
won't have to commute very far. I would
enjoy working a lot more.
Interviewer :
I see. Well, do you have any questions
about the position?
Applicant :
Yes, I would like to know what the
possibilities for advancement are within this company.
Interviewer :
Although this is the top secretarial
position within the organization, there are regular salary increments based on the
amount of time an employee has served the company, and you can look forward to
generous pay increases if you remain with us. Generally, employees are reviewed
once a year by their superiors and decisions about raises are made at that
time.
